Why Most B2B CRO Programs Test the Wrong Pages

Homepage tests get the attention. Pricing and comparison pages get the revenue. A framework for prioritizing correctly.

Why Most B2B CRO Programs Test the Wrong Pages

Ask most B2B marketing teams what their CRO program is testing, and the answer is usually the homepage. It’s the highest-traffic page, it’s visible to leadership, and it feels like the obvious place to start. It’s also, in our experience, rarely where the revenue is being lost.

Where B2B buyers actually decide

B2B buying cycles are long and multi-touch. By the time a visitor reaches your homepage for the third or fourth time, they’ve usually already formed an opinion. The pages where a real decision gets made — pricing, comparison, and demo request pages — see a fraction of the traffic but carry a disproportionate share of the buying decision.

A simple prioritization framework

We score pages for testing priority using three factors: traffic volume, proximity to conversion (how close the page sits to a demo request or signup), and existing conversion rate relative to comparable pages. A pricing page with modest traffic but a conversion rate well below benchmark almost always outranks a homepage test in expected impact.

What we test on pricing and comparison pages

  • Plan framing and anchor pricing order
  • Objection-handling copy placed above the fold versus below
  • Comparison table structure against named competitors versus generic “vs. legacy tools” framing
  • Form length and required fields on demo request pages

The measurement problem

Low-traffic, high-intent pages take longer to reach statistical significance with a standard A/B split. We address this by running sequential tests with a longer minimum duration and by using conversion-weighted significance thresholds instead of a fixed two-week cutoff, so we’re not forced to call a result before the data actually supports one.
