A Practical Guide to Auditing Core Web Vitals at Scale

Core Web Vitals audits go wrong most often not because teams lack the data, but because they act on the wrong version of it. Understanding the difference between field and lab data — and which one to prioritize when they disagree — is the first real decision point in any audit.

Field data is the signal that matters for rankings

Field data (from the Chrome User Experience Report, surfaced in Search Console and PageSpeed Insights) reflects real user experiences across real devices and network conditions. This is the data Google actually uses as a ranking signal. Lab data (from tools like Lighthouse) is a controlled, single-run simulation — useful for debugging, but not what’s being measured for search.

Auditing at scale, not page by page

For sites with thousands of pages, auditing every URL individually isn’t practical. We group pages by template — product page, category page, blog post, landing page — since pages sharing a template usually share the same performance bottlenecks. Fixing the template fixes every page built on it.

Fix priorities we default to

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

Usually a hero image or web font loading issue. Priority fixes: preload the LCP image, serve responsive image sizes, and ensure critical fonts use font-display: swap.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

Often caused by unoptimized third-party scripts — chat widgets, tag managers with too many nested triggers, or unthrottled scroll listeners. We audit total third-party script weight and defer anything not needed for the initial interaction.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

Almost always missing width/height attributes on images and embeds, or content injected above existing content after load (cookie banners, ad slots) without reserved space.

What we report back

Rather than a single aggregate score, we report field data by template and by device type, since mobile and desktop experiences frequently diverge enough to need separate fix priorities.
