The Crawl Budget Mistakes We Find in Every Enterprise Audit

Faceted navigation, parameter bloat and orphaned pages — the three issues that quietly waste crawl budget at scale.

The Crawl Budget Mistakes We Find in Every Enterprise Audit

Crawl budget only becomes a visible problem once a site is large enough for it to matter — and by then, the waste has usually been compounding for years. Across enterprise audits, the same three issues show up almost every time.

1. Faceted navigation left unmanaged

Filter and sort combinations on category or product listing pages can generate thousands of near-duplicate URLs. Googlebot happily crawls all of them, spending budget on pages that add no unique value and often aren’t even meant to be indexed.

The fix is rarely “noindex everything” — it’s a deliberate policy: which parameter combinations are worth indexing, which should be crawlable but not indexed, and which should be blocked from crawling entirely via robots.txt or link-level controls.

2. Parameter bloat from tracking and session IDs

UTM parameters, session identifiers and internal search strings frequently get linked internally instead of stripped, creating an explosion of duplicate URLs that all resolve to the same content. Log files usually show Googlebot spending a disproportionate share of requests on these variants.

3. Orphaned and deep-buried pages

Pages that exist in the sitemap but have no internal links pointing to them get crawled inconsistently and rank inconsistently as a result. This is common after a redesign or migration where old internal linking wasn’t rebuilt to reflect the new structure.

How we prioritize the fix

We always start with a log file analysis, not just a crawl. A crawl tells you what’s crawlable; log files tell you what’s actually being crawled, and how often. Comparing the two exposes exactly where budget is being wasted versus where it’s being spent on the pages that matter.

From there, the fix order is: block or canonicalize the biggest sources of duplicate URLs first, rebuild internal linking to surface orphaned high-value pages, then monitor crawl stats in Search Console weekly to confirm the shift.

Find your growth constraint.

Let's discuss what's actually holding growth back.
